Life with the Ukulele

Wow it has been almost 2 years since a blog post.
Was talking to a friend and she asked why I stopped blogging. I guess I’ve been lazy! Haha

Found some pictures lying around and decided to do a short post about what I’ve been doing for the past year +…

Been playing a lot of music, and making a career out of it. It’s been very good so far. Getting to play at gigs, teaching students, conducting workshops and meeting many great people along the way. So far Ukulele Movement (the name of the company I’m working for) has hired amazing people, and its great to see that the UM family has been growing!

Just a short post to get the ball rolling!
Stay tuned for more~

3rd Ukulele Meeting

Ever since setting up my online ukulele community website, it has been nothing but great all the way~!
I’ve met up with the Singapore visitors of my site, and this third meeting has currently taken itself into a new level by joining with another group of people who share the same love in ukulele playing within Singapore.

It was a real pity that I couldn’t join the meeting due to the need to work overtime on that night.
=(

Hopefully I can join the next meeting session! Looking forward to meeting all the people~!
Here are some pictures of the meeting~

Dnium KL Interns Farewell

It seem to happen so fast. Suddenly, it has been 6 months. And it was time for the 2008 batch of interns in Dnium KL to leave…
Weisheng and Kah Thye.

From left: Chun Hoong, Weisheng, Gigi, Kah Thye, Me

To celebrate their farewell, we ordered 2 extra large pizzas from Dominos, and we finished it all. No pictures of the pizzas though, as we were very hungry and we forgot to take pictures before eating. =P

From left: Chun Hoong, Weisheng, Gigi, Kah Thye, Me

Both of them are good workers, with Weisheng being the more flexible one.
They’ll have one additional week’s holiday before going back to school. A holiday worth looking forward to…

Weisheng and Kah Thye, thank you for all the help at Dnium Sdn Bhd.
We wish you both all the best for your studies and future career.

Dnium Pte Ltd’s Long Service Staff

My second blog on one of my colleagues leaving the company.
One of the longest service staff at Dnium.
This guy, is not only good at his work, but he’s a joker and rather talented in other aspects as well… Such as music, card tricks and his newest hobby: Photography

29th August 2008
Sheng Yuen’s last day at Dnium Pte Ltd

He was already in Dnium, with his elder brother, when I first joined Dnium Pte Ltd to work part time during 2004. His elder brother left sometime in 2006, while he continued to work until now. We got along pretty easily because we had a common interest in music: Electric guitars, bands, Metallica, Megadeth, Children of Bodom…

FACT NO. 1 FOR FELLOW DNIUM-ers: Did you know that Sheng Yuen can play the piano?
He has a grade 5…. Though he says he can only play while looking at the book, I feel that being able to read musical notes is quite a skill.. Take it from me, he plays the piano.

Sheng Yuen now has a real liking for photography. He bought himself a digital SLR and has been snapping photos from various events within Singapore ever since. You may visit his photo portfolio here. If you are looking for a freelance photographer within Singapore, you can contact him as well.

Sheng Yuen: "You have to take the photo like this….."

We got some freebies stuff from DHL at one time, for working on a few of their projects.
And this is what Sheng Yuen came up with…
DHL BOY (Best Day Every Day)

Hilarious fellow~
I’m really glad I got this photo to blog it in here.

FACT NO.2 for fellow DNIUM-ers: Did you know that Sheng Yuen is a good singer?
If you have not gone to a jamming session or karaoke session with him, you might still have heard him singing backing vocals to songs which he plays in the office. He has a good voice for rock songs. He can sing pop songs as well. Haha. Visit a karaoke with him, and you’ll find out!

FACT NO.3 for fellow DNIUM-ers: Sheng Yuen’s main musical instrument is the drums.
Yes, this guy can play the drums. But I think he has not played much, ever since his electronic drum kit malfunctioned. We once jammed over at his place, and he was playing drums with double pedal bass drum for Children of Bodom’s Silent Night, Bodom Night, like nobody’s business!

Alright, to end this post, I’ll include one rather recent photograph of Dnium Pte Ltd’s staff coming down to KL, as well as some pictures of the Dnium Singapore office. All taken on Sheng Yuen camera.
Sheng Yuen, I wish you all the best.
Take care, and I’ll see you soon when I get back to Singapore.

AND YOU STILL OWE ME THE TEH TARIK FOR LOSING THE BET OF NOT BUYING THE TOWN PORTAL IN DOTA FOR "YOU KNOW WHICH GAME"…
Hahahahahahahaaaaa…..

Dnium Pte Ltd Interns’ Farewell 2008

Backdated post:
Actual event happened on Friday, 1st August 2008..

Every year, my company would hire interns from various Polytechnics in Singapore, and from Universities in Malaysia.
Each time, we would hold a farewell for them when their internship period was over.

This year, our Singapore interns are my juniors!
They are both from Ngee Ann Polytechnic.
Both bubbly in nature and quick adapting to the environment in Dnium Pte Ltd.

Lee Lai Sheng (Chris) and Lim Xiu Guan

Their internship period was really short, in my opinion. But nevertheless, it was longer than my time’s internship period.
Times are definitely changing.

As usual, to hold farewell parties, we would go to the cafe downstairs of the office (we renamed the cafe "Farewell Cafe"). So far, this is my second farewell session at the cafe. The other times, I was not around in Singapore.

The menu at the cafe didn’t really change much. Based on the previous farewell for Yuping,  I think the prices have went up a little though. The food is still nice, and the environment was much better than the usual eating places.

Kristian and I both had spagetti, and we made a small mess from opening the top of the cheese shaker, and the cheese falling on the table. I swept mine under my plate. So the cheese was well concealed. Hehe…

Kristian trying to act natural before the camera

As a standard procedure, the entire group of staff would head up to the ninth floor to hang out, and spend the remaining minutes of lunch hour chatting and slacking on the comfortable sofas. There was a new thing going on in Dnium Singapore lately. A number of the staff have bought PSP units and were playing either Virtua Tennis or Monster Hunter over the wireless local area network.

Harry and Chris concentrating on their game.

I asked what the interns would want to do after they leave Dnium. They have about over a month of holidays left, and they both intend to work. They even mentioned the possibility of coming back to Dnium to work. Unfortunately, there isn’t much work to be done in the Singapore office for them.

From left:
Chris, Myself, Suganda, Kevin, Harry,
William, Xiu Guan, Kristian

So I guess they’re on their own.
It felt sad when they messaged me on MSN during this very last day, to thank me for all the guidance and time for teaching them.
So nice of the both of them.

I hope you both find a good temp job soon.
Earn some cash during the remaining holidays, then go back to school and study hard!
Stay in touch on MSN yeah?

Take care…

Yuping’s Farewell at Dnium

*Backdated post
Actual event took place on 22nd February 2008……

I was surprised when Yuping told me that she visits my blog/photos on MSN spaces, even during the long period when I did not update anything.

Well Yuping, this entry is for you…..
And there will definitely be many posts for you to read this year!

Li Yu Ping
Dnium’s Database Administrator

Once again, another colleague leave the company.

Li Yu Ping, another colleague to be remembered from my time at Dnium Pte Ltd, Singapore. Definitely well worthy to be added into Dnium’s Hall of Fame (if there ever was one). She is pretty, smart, caring, hardworking, kind, and takes great initiative at work. Has always been a great person to work and to talk with…..

Her reason for leaving Dnium?

Her husband has got a job posting over at New York, United States of America for a period of 2 years. Therefore, her whole family (Herself, husband and kids) will be moving to stay there. Although my attempt to go to the States to work didn’t turn out as planned, at least all turned out fine for Yuping and family. Congratulations!

When I asked her if she was going to work in the States, she laughed and said most probably not. Her plan was going to spend the 2 years there, taking good care of her family, and taking the chance to tour around the States. 2 years is quite a lot of time for a tour in the States. Take your time Yuping~!

Over a chat with her during lunch, I came to know that apart from her US accomodations and other matters in Singapore being settled, the only thing left is looking for a school for her kids. Her son is still young, and probably is not aware of what’s going on, by going to the States at such an early age… She also said that her daughter knows they are going abroad, but will probably feel unused to the new environment.

I’m sure she’ll get used to it soon.
Yuping~ Give her a hug for me… and your son too~

Lunch was at the restaurant downstairs, on the ground floor of Block 20, where Dnium is located. It is a Western style restaurant, and the food and drinks tasted good.

Sausages with Rice~

Ham and Spaghetti~

Fried Chicken Wings with Rice~

Grilled Saba Fish with Rice~

Refreshing Grape juice~!
Yuping’s recommendation!

Lunch was great! And we completed the entire farewell with a cake which Yuping bought. Yum~!

Fresh Fruit Cake!

Soon it was time to say goodbye. Some sad feelings, but there were also happy feelings.
Mixed feelings all around…..

Yuping showing her happy self,
while I was sending her off…

Once again, I wish Yuping all the best in her future.
Hope to see you back after 2 years, or in the US, if I were to go there for a holiday!

Take care!

Podcasting Training at Bedok South Secondary

ATTENTION PLEASE!!!!!!!

I didn’t use the above line on the students today though, but it is a title to one of Aya Ueto’s drama shows. It’s about her being a rocker chick, and slowly learning to become a flight cabin attendant. It’s nice. Check it out at www.crunchyroll.com

Anyway, how did this "me giving training" all come about?

I was asked by Charles, a Polytechnic classmate of mine, to help fill in for a 3 hour training lesson on Podcasting at Bedok South Secondary School, Singapore. The lesson was about introducing Podcasting and the program Audacity, for them to do their own audio recordings. Charles runs a Multimedia and Robotics training company with his elder brother and another Polytechnic classmate of mine (Kevin Wong). They basically supply trainers to schools in Singapore.

Since we’re good friends and he was rather short handed, I thought I’d just take up the one day job. And no regrets on that decision.

This is Kevin, followed by Charles…

And here are some pictures of Bedok South Secondary.

I apologize for the lack of pictures about Bedok South. Due to my excitement, I forgot, and only snapped the 2 pictures when I was leaving the school, and found their logo on Google.

So the day went like this: I went to Bedok South with another trainer named Joey. We met up with the teacher in-charge (Mrs Yee) of the school’s InfoComm Club, and she led us to the students at the computer lab. Joey took the upper secondary students (sec 3 – 5) in the new computer lab, while I took the lower secondary (sec 1 – 2) in the older lab. Joey was lucky as her lab was newer, and had a mic system, so she didn’t need to speak very loud. (She was having a sore throat, so good for her to have the mic). The computers were new and had no problem with hardware. So her lesson went on smoothly.

Lessons were from 2.30pm till 5.30pm.

As for me, there was no mic system, (I didn’t expect it anyway, I was still thinking of the ‘old school’ method of teaching with a louder voice), the computers were older, the school’s Technical Assistant didn’t install the program Audacity into all computers, and they didn’t copy the lame.dll file, which was required to save the audio into MP3 format. More technical problems include the computer’s soundcard was not working, so the students couldn’t recording or listen to anything, and one pc would automatically shut down itself. I had to get the students to share computers, and I even had a group to use the main computer (which was the one I use to run my presentation slides and demonstrations through the projector) The worse problem was that the student’s computers cannot save their work onto the computer’s harddisk, due to some administrative rights issue. I had to go around saving their work into my thumbdrive. Since there was no lame.dll, every student had to wait for my thumbdrive to come along.

So those were the main problems. Here’s the fun part!

I started out my lesson by going through the presentation slides. Had to throw in some examples of recording using Audacity, to prevent the students from getting too bored by just seeing text off the projector. I also thought it would be appropriate to throw in some examples of podcasting such as Mr Brown, who is rather popular in Singapore. Got the students laughing and I didn’t notice anyone dozing off.

Eventually, it came to the time whereby the students have to commence on their own recording. They had to work in pairs due to the lack of working PCs. Some of them had working PCs but without properly setup soundcards. So I got about 4 or 5 groups saying "teacherrrrr….. my computer cannot record…. help…."

Naturally, I couldn’t be at their PCs all at once, so I kept them busy by asking them to write out a simple script for them to record. While they were writing out their scripts, I could go around to troubleshoot the problematic PCs. I told them they could write about anything. There was this ambitious group who wrote a script as though they were newscasters. There was this other group who went on about ways on how to save the environment. The girls mostly went on about introducing themselves, their hobbies, who is their best friend etc etc…. Cute…..

I told them they had to write out their script, EG. 5 lines, and record the 5 lines in a jumbled sequence. They would need to use the editing features of Audacity to re-sequence their work. To prevent them from cheating by recording the correct sequence initially, I also told them that "for those of you who are thinking of the easy way out, I can tell if you have recorded the lines in sequence, and whether you have edited them or not, so don’t try to cheat…"

It’s true. I can.. I’ve done sound engineering on my own before… Haha…

Okay, after they were done recording. It was time to show them some effects that Audacity can do. Effects like echo and speed change was to be gone through. But the most popular effect was probably the pitch change. The kids are just facinated by changing their own voices into chipmunk voices, by just raising the pitch. Lowering the pitch would end up sound like an old man/woman.

The students were playful (yes, being secondary 1 and 2 pupils)… I must have been a brat myself when I was their age. It felt kinda good to see secondary school students again. There was this little Malay kid who kept going " teacher, how come I don’t see this, that ". There was this Indian boy who probably reached puberty earlier than the rest, and he was like bigger in size and mentioned a few vulgarities at times. I had to tell him "And you watch your language…", Russell Peters style, when he was talking during my presentation.

Just sideline a bit, Russell Peters is a great comedian, check him out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24Ryj1ywoqw

At the end, it was 530pm, and they had to go home as Mrs Yee informed that some of their parents were already waiting for them at the school porch. I went around their computers to save their work, and take a listen as well. There was this group who ended their recording by saying "I like the teacher teaching us today". Awwww isn’t that sweet…….

I left Bedok South with Joey, and she asked me how was it…. Overall, I think I did rather okay, considering this was my first time giving training. I generally never had problems meeting people, regardless of age. And I like to teach people, probably due to my saintly patience. I like interacting with people. I would definitely go for it again when given another chance. Who knows, I might end up being a teacher in future. =D
